Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
