UK light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi made a winning yet disappointing debut to life under new promoters with a points victory over Parker in the Manchester arena.

The Olympic bronze medallist's activity level seemingly secured him a judges' verdict in a competitive 10-round bout at the Co-op Live Arena.

But the challenger had his moments, landing some telling individual punches in a fight where the styles never quite clicked, with frequent clinching spoiling the contest.

The scoring judges judged it 96-94 for to Buatsi, with the third a 95-95.

"It wasn't my finest showing but what defines champions? They win," Buatsi commented in the ring as he was greeted with disapproval from the spectators.

The Londoner bounced back after his maiden career setback - an epic battle with Callum Smith in last winter - to secure a 20th pro success.

Some ringside observers felt Parker, thirty-one, should have been awarded the decision but the Derbyshire fighter endured the second setback of his 28-bout career.

His career development has slowed in the past few years through promotional disputes and considerable time of inactivity.

Once tipped as the next star of the British fight scene, he now finds himself trying to achieve expectations - possibly in what appears to be a final roll of the dice - under fresh management.

He started carefully, with the two boxers prepared to overcommit in a calculated opening few rounds.

The challenger, whose sole prior loss came at super-middleweight against his former opponent in two years ago after suffering a hand injury in the contest, was making just his second fight at the higher weight class.

By the middle rounds, the underdog had stayed in contention, creating difficulties for the favorite, who utilized a solid defense to narrowly win the better rounds.

The spectators' acceptance decreased because of constant clinching, with Parker falling to the floor various instances during clinches.

Parker ended stronger, but multiple periods were challenging to assess. However, previous titleholder Carl Frampton - working with Dazn - had it significantly in favor for Parker, scoring for Buatsi just a single round.

The victor progresses, but with the caliber of heavy hitter David Benavidez, and Russian star Bivol ruling the division, the road to world glory - judging by this showing - still appears challenging.

Ricky Hatton Homage Inspires Manchester Derby Fight

In the secondary fight, Lyndon Arthur overcame Bradley Rea by split-decision in a outstanding Manchester vs Manchester contest to secure the continental belt.

The stadium grew hushed for a deeply poignant memorial prior to the bout as a bell ceremony rang in memory of local hero Hatton, who passed away aged 46 in recently.

It was the initial significant broadcast boxing event in the urban center since the passing of Hatton. As the concluding sound disappeared, the silence gave way to a chant of "there's only one Hatton".

The action inside the ropes equaled the feeling. The eventual winner was sent to the canvas by a powerful punch directly to the face in the early round, rising shakily to his feet on the count of eight.

But the red-colored equipment of the fighter soon advanced again. On the opposite side, the opponent - in rival City blue - was injured soon, significant bruising forming under his face as the duo landed punishing blows.

Rea, twenty-seven, connected with strong blows but Arthur, thirty-four, fought fire with fire with stinging uppercuts as the action hardly diminished over the full distance.

The victor narrowly won the decision with judges scorecards of 114-114, narrow lead and wider gap, but each competitor were persistent and courageous, everything their hero Hatton embodied.
