Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
