Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
