In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
