The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
