Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
